Laura Pumillo
Nutritionist and Health Education Specialist
MA, RDN, CDN, CEDS-C
Laura is a dedicated clinical dietitian. She started out in acute care and covered medical units from oncology to the ICU. For just shy of 30 years, Laura has been dedicated to the treatment of disordered eating. Every person who struggles with food, weight and body image issues is unique and presents with different symptoms, even with identical diagnoses. Laura’s deep understanding of the complexities of ED’s and the need for a paradigm shift in the treatment and diagnosis of disordered eating is part of what makes her unique and highly skilled at promoting recovery.
Laura’s professional experience in eating disorders was obtained as the Clinical Nutrition Manager at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell-Westchester’s Behavioral Health Center. In addition to her managerial role, she worked as the lead dietitian of the dedicated inpatient Eating Disorders Program.
She managed the nutrition program under the supervision of top experts in the field including Dr. Wendy Harris, MD, Dr. Henry Chang, MD, and notably, Dr. Katherine Halmi, MD, a renowned psychiatrist and pediatrician. About 20 years ago Laura made the move into private practice where she spent 10 years as a Senior Dietitian alongside Joy Bauer, MS, RD, the well-known author and expert nutritionist for The Today Show. Laura was also part of the team at Columbus Park Collaborative and Armonk Psychiatry and after 2 years, opted to open her own private practice in NYC. All told, Laura has spent the last 28 years of her career dedicated to helping people heal from disordered eating. She has literally seen thousands of individuals with every known symptom or presentation of disordered eating. Laura holds certificates as a New York State Certified Nutritionist and iadep® Certified Eating Disorder Specialist & Supervisor/Consultant. She is a somatic and trauma-informed professional with certifications from the Embodied Recovery Institute. It is in her nature to learn and endlessly explore new solutions to the shared struggles of body size, choosing healthy & pleasurable foods and engaging in movement or hobbies that support longevity and fulfillment of mind-body and soul.
How I Work
I define myself as an expert in the eating disorder field because treating and healing people struggling with disordered eating has been my vocation since College. I do this work because ED’s steal lives. They rob people of true connection, inclusion and often lead to irreversible damage, not just to the body, but to the whole person. I’m trustworthy, reliable and skilled at accurately identifying my clients’ core issues and their barriers to change. I’m well known for my ability to connect with even the most so-called “difficult or treatment resistant” patient. I lived with the frustration, pain, and confusion that accompanies disordered eating and a full recovery is not just possible but probable. ED symptoms are complex, multifactorial adaptations to manage fear and disconnection. ED’s offer the illusion of safety, control and acceptance. Broadly speaking, eating disorders are relational illnesses with physical and psychological manifestations. I’m certain everyone can recover. It takes two non-negotiable traits: persistence and courage. It is my job to help you harness those traits and together we will take the circuitous journey to improve emotional and physical health. How far you wish to travel is your decision. You can opt for the elimination of symptoms or take the longer path to joyful embodiment.
